CCS share rise, Is there a game plan or upcoming partial sale by JKH?

Fri Dec 02, 2016 9:43 am by Gallardo

Any thoughts on this?

JKH holds the vast majority of this illiquid giant, now around the 6th largest in terms of market cap (from a previous 9?)...

Anyone know if there is a stake being unloaded as a parcel?

SCAP will shine with AAIC

Tue Aug 02, 2016 2:42 pm by coolkane

Scap is having a potential to move further with its strong fundamentals EPS 1.00 PE 6x and NAV 4.89 PBV1.2 further to dispose its subsidiary AAIC general ltd it may get more inflows to the company and as holding company SCAP bottom line will be boosted.
So my view on this company is to strong buy with the upside of 8.00 within short time span.

Looking in to Investment Trust sector

Thu Dec 01, 2016 7:43 am by EquityChamp

Dear Friends,

My expectation for the market is to recover by at least 3% during December months starting from today. And one of a key sector that will improve is Investment Trusts and also one of the key sectors hit hard during past two months.

From that sector stocks like Ascot, Ceylon Guardian, Ceylon Investment, Lanka Century, Guardian Capital, and Renuka Holdings were the main picks for me. Out of them too Ascot, Ceylon Guardian and Ceylon Investment demonstrate beta values in excess of 1 so I am expecting a good recovery in those counters during this month. Those three shares have come …

Dead Cat Bounce !

Thu Dec 01, 2016 10:19 am by Prince

Dead cat bounce

In finance, a dead cat bounce is a small, brief recovery in the price of a declining stock. Derived from the idea that "even a dead cat will bounce if it falls from a great height", the phrase, which originated on Wall Street, is also popularly applied to any case where a subject experiences a brief resurgence during or following a severe decline.

History

The earliest citation of the phrase in the news media dates to 1985 when the Singaporean and Malaysian stock markets bounced back after a hard fall during the recession of that year. Journalists Horace Brag and Wong …

Trading Opportunities in Manufcturing Sector Stocks

Wed Jan 13, 2016 6:54 pm by EquityChamp

I thought it is good to share some of the statistics relating to manufacturing sector stocks. You can refer to the below analysis.

My conclusion is that the stocks highlighted in green have shown greater resistance to the current market volatility and will have strong case for long term investments.

Stocks highlighted in blue have been the victims of the panic selling but will have the chance to go high if the market recovers in short term so there can be trading opportunities with lower risk. Stocks like GRAN, REG, ALUF,LITE,PARQ, TYRE will offer high returns at lower risks.

The stocks …

Note 12 in the latest quarterly financial statement mentions that VONE has changed the SAMP status to 'available for sale'.  Can it be an indication that VONE will try to find a buyer and dispose SAMP if the price is right.
Anyone has any idea on this matter?

With the fear of huge penalties you can see drivers are reluctant to overtake even in no risk situations.
I experienced this situation last few days and had to crawl in long queues of vehicles, flowing  Piaggios, L boards or 'Kunu lorries' etc.
This may cause big wastage of fuel all over the Island and add more burden to our US$ crisis.

US$ wasted may go over the Rupees planned to collect  from traffic fines.  Is this another  mess by our Rata Kanna aka gon Thadeesh?

The TNA yesterday wrote to the President and Prime Minister saying they are “totally opposed to pre-fabricated steel houses” and called for civilians in the North and East to be provided with traditional brick houses in keeping with their culture and way of life.
It said they were dismayed to find that Rehabilitation and Resettlement Minister D.M. Swaminathan had made personal telephone calls to several of them inviting them to make requests for prefabricated houses in their respective electorates.
These houses are priced at Rs 2.1Million each as against each masonry house costing just …

Stock-Picking using discounted cash flow analysis

Thu Nov 24, 2016 9:27 pm by EquityChamp

Doing basic fundamental valuation is quite straightforward; all it takes is a little time and energy. The goal of analyzing a company's fundamentals is to find a stock's intrinsic value, a fancy term for what you believe a stock is really worth - as opposed to the value at which it is being traded in the marketplace. If the intrinsic value is more than the current share price, your analysis is showing that the stock is worth more than its price and that it makes sense to buy the stock.

Although there are many different methods of finding the intrinsic value, the premise behind all the …

Stock market for beginners. Code of conduct to be followed

Mon Dec 26, 2011 9:41 pm by Asoka Samarakone

Stock market for beginners.
Code of conduct to be followed

Don't just invest in something without completely thinking it over.
Don't invest money that you cannot afford to lose
Don’t be influenced by the opinions of others.
Don’t trade other people’s ideas.

Don’t buy all the stock at one time, buy a small amount at first and see what happens. Spread out your buying time over days or weeks. If it goes down a little, buy some more. If it goes down a lot, you may want to get out limiting your losses.
Invest in more than one or two stocks so that lose in one stock can recover from the …

Stock market for beginners. Interesting reading.

Thu Nov 03, 2016 2:50 pm by Asoka Samarakone

Stock market for beginners. Interesting reading.

We trade because we want quick, short term profits on a consistent basis. We want to cash flow the market. Milk it like a cow.
Make consistent, small, short term gains rather than trying to hit a home run on every trade. Don't ever forget that.
Don't marry a stock, marry the idea of making money trading stocks. That's the only way to do it.

For me "All stocks are equally worthless”
I don't hold on to any illusion that the stock market will continue to go up and provide a nice retirement for me.
I could care less which way the market …

TJL doing well...?

Tue Oct 25, 2016 8:46 pm by omegaplus

I was looking at TJL price movement, seems like it have good support level around 46.5.

+ points

*. With all other factors such as expanding they had last two years , agreements for research and support with other companies,  TJL invested heavily in future , well planned .
*. GSP+ was a big hope for many, but it was doing really well without it. But we get it in 2017 March , it should be a big boost.

- points
*.Many traders hoped for GSP+  this year and depends whether they will hold it till 2017.

A half century the wrong way

Mon Nov 21, 2016 1:19 pm by Gallardo

A (red bloody) half century and no clear skies just yet.   Then again, when there's blood on the streets, it's time to quietly collect.  More falls are certainly possible but every cloud has its silver lining.  Just as the recent droughts and power cuts gave way to rain, dark clouds and a red index will eventually turn to a silver lining and green shoots!  That's the certainty of markets uncertainty and cycles!  Let's hope we can turn the situation into an opportunity and stay positiveness through these troubled times...  All the best everyone, so many shares now have ever improving PEs!!!

I can see good signs of improving performances. Q2 16/17 shows great growth in results. Gross profits improved by 20%. Though insurance expenses shows a setback the 11% increase in finance income off sets the overall impact helping to generate 11% in PAT YoY.

Capital Gain Tax

Tue Nov 15, 2016 12:33 pm by RoughRider

Dear All,

I'm a little confused on the application of CGT.

The following are what I understood about it & kindly correct me/add more details if below points are wrong/incomplete.

(I) CGT is not applicable on share-based transactions (CSE will not be affected)

(II) 10% of CGT is applicable on property-based transactions (acquired within last 10 years) & only the seller has to pay 10% CGT based on the capital gain made on such transactions.

This will come into effect on property-based transactions after 01st April 2017 & sellers would not have to pay the tax for transactions before that.
