Calculating 5 Year Growth Rate

Mon Apr 14, 2014 9:52 pm by lux2014

I am just wondering as to which method gives best results for 5 Year Growth Rates (let's say 5 Year EPS Growth rate).

Most common is the CAGR but it takes only starting and ending figures and for a volatile stock, result may not be representative of the actual picture.

What is your view on average growth rate calculated as follows:-

Growth rate = [(Current year - Previous year) / Previous year] x 100%

Average Growth rate = [( GR Y1 + GR Y2 + GR Y3 + GR Y4 + GR Y5) / 5]

GR = Growth Rate
Y = Year

Get the growth rate every year, add it up, then divide it by 5. [/(][/(Current]

3 sectors to keep away from

Mon Apr 14, 2014 4:01 pm by Balanced_Views

Banking. Automobile. Plantations.

For the next few quarters keep away - gold prices have affected banks, tax increase has affected vehicle imports and weather has affected plantations.

Concentrate on under-valued companies which are expected to show good profits in near future - such as TKYO, KAPI, HHL, EXPO and TJL

Sir Isaac Newton's investment in the stock of the South Sea Company in 1720

Sun Apr 13, 2014 5:09 pm by Jayashantha

Back in the spring of 1720, Sir Isaac Newton owned shares in the South Sea Company, the hottest stock in England. Sensing that the market was getting out of hand, the great physicist muttered that he “could calculate the motions of the heavenly bodies, but not the madness of the people.” Newton dumped his South Sea shares, pocketing a 100% profit totaling £7,000. But just months later, swept up in the wild enthusiasm of the market, Newton jumped back in at a much higher price—and lost …

Lessons from the dotcom bubble

Sun Apr 13, 2014 5:02 pm by Jayashantha

In mid-1999, after earning a 117.3% return in just the first five months of the year, Monument Internet Fund portfolio manager Alexander Cheung predicted that his fund would gain 50% a year over the next three to five years and an annual average of 35%“over the next 20 years.”

The highest 20-year return in mutual fund history was 25.8% per year, achieved by the legendary Peter Lynch of Fidelity Magellan over the two decades ending December 31, 1994. Lynch’s performance turned …

How strategic is Sri Lanka?

Sat Apr 12, 2014 8:40 am by Sstar

(CNN) -- Five hundred years ago as the Spanish and Portuguese empires were carving up the Western hemisphere into colonial spheres, Europe's imperial competition in the Indian Ocean was equally intense.

As the first to navigate around Africa's southern cape in the late 15th century, Portugal landed upon India and beyond to Southeast Asia, establishing forts, outposts and colonies alongside the Arabian Sea coastal Indian kingdoms of Calicut, Kochi, Goa and Kannur, quickly wresting control of …

Great Quarter LIOC TFIL TKYO TJL

Fri Apr 11, 2014 12:22 pm by Aubrey Perera

Hi ,

Some shares with expected final quarter results LIOC/TFIL/TKYO/TJL , some will surely break all time highs , while the others will break yearly highs. watch out for PE values. LIOC is already adjusting now. Interesting to see dividend payout as well. EPS for TFIL should be around Rs.3 and probable dividend at least Rs. 1 hopefully, unless they withhold dividend due to merger issue. please feel free to add more shares that are worth talking about these are my picks.

Sovereign Bond Issue and Stock Market

Wed Apr 09, 2014 8:03 am by gagamini

It is encouraging to note that latest Sovereign Bond issue has secured with the lowerest interest rate at 5.125% and it oversubscribed 8.3 times to $ 4.25 billion .

This itself indicates the confidence of our economy extended by the world leading Fund Managers despite negative publicity of Geneva and human right situation of our country and my feeling is that this would positively affect our Stock Market to commence next bull run which is already on the way .
