I have come across a land title and it has described the extent of the land in old style sinhalese way and I dont understand that.
Can any one in this forum(specially if you are a lawyer)explain that to me how many in Acres ,roots and perches:
Wee Paalak?
daha hathara(14) Laahaka pamana wee wapasariya ?
Kurrakkan seruwaka pamana wapasariya
?
Thank you

Great find. According to article the answers to you problem is below.

Note that though the measurements and areas are roughly accurate due to physical factors used in these measurement schemes the "amount" can vary a little in modern day.

Pala = 0.5 acre roughly ( extent over which 10 laha of paddy could be sown)

Seruwa = 4 hundu

14 laha = hundu 24 x 14 = seru 6x14

Okay. You should be happy that a forum on equity can answer ancient measurement schemes.

We have some talent here to do research ( Kasper).

Anyway for the benefit of the members who like to study such things , can you actually post the NON personal content of the deed in sinhalese letters as in the original document?

Ex :
You said paalak. Wapasiriya, Laaha

How is it typed in Sinhalese?

Again I reiterate that we do not want to know the personal details of owner ship etc just the content where the pala, laha etc is mentioned. You can post in sinhalse as in the document.

When you translate to english ( as you have done ) the traditional pronunciation as in the deed was gone. Thats why I am asking so I can comapre. Hpw old is the document do you know?

This is very interesting and shows how little we (sorry I Embarassed ) know.
Let’s see the original texts as suggested.

Thanks for every one saving me time and of course money.,Kasper you have done a good job and thanks, slstock and kithsiri thank you for your comments too.,I am sorry that I dont know how to write in sinhalese
Now in this particular title it says
]i]wee paalaka nohoth danata wee daha hathara (14) laahaka pamana wapasariya athi kumburata saha eeta yaawoo pillawa kurakkan seruwaka pamana wapasariyatat [/i]

According to you guys, the above mentioned extent of the land is some thing like, lesser than an acre.
But according to the owner of the land it is 2.5 Acres to 3 Acres.,So I ve been misled by the owner I guess.,
Thanks for your valuable feed and appreciate it.,

It is over 2 acres then it atleast has to be a "amuna" .

14 laha is under 1 acre.

One thing to note is the location this land is situated in. The general consensus is what we discussed. But from area to area there can be some variations.

What area ( disctrcit) is this in . Also how old is this deed do you think.

Pls note that land areas are measured using "KURAKKAN" measurments while paddy fields are measured using Paddy measurments. Land measured by "Kurakkan Seruwa" is much bigger than that of "Paddy Seruwa". I think owner must be right.

The deed has 2 parts

1) wee paalaka nohoth danata wee daha hathara (14) laahaka pamana wapasariya athi kumburata
2) saha eeta yaawoo pillawa kurakkan seruwaka pamana wapasariyatat

part 1: wee kumbura is under 1 acre it seems as the deed talks about a "pala" or 14 "laha"
part 2 : kurakkan seruvaka sowing can it be another 1.5 acres ( for the owner to be telling the truth)

You will need to check on this .

Yes, this was not so long ago I think. I heard my mother mentioning this famous story.

This is becoming more interesting now.
If I am not mistaken that argument (presented by CRdeS) was not accepted and the accusers were given jail terms.

Just a small correction:

But in ancient sinhala වී කොලය means ගොයම් ගස් ගොඩක්.

Wee kolaya means the mount of harvested paddy packed in a shape of a dome.
