Post by anubis on Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:08 pm

@ROHAN, REEF? are you serious? (I don't know about the rest)

Have a look at their latest financials: http://cse.lk/cmt/upload_report_file/568_1329307166183.pdf

All I can see is that they are still making losses. If I remember correctly, they are working on some new hotels that would take about 2-3 more years (as I recollect from past posts in this forum).

I refuse to call REEF a gem, but may be you can see its value (if you are a long term investor and have a very wider understanding about how things will turn out at that time - who knows)

Anyway, I'm not an expert. Just commenting based on common sense.

Cheers!

Hope you are kidding my friend. Just because it has gone up due to manipulation doesn't mean it's a 'gem'. Don't mislead others.

I agree with you except ACAP.

Though COLO and UML are currently undervalued shares, I would like to refrain from investing on motor sector for the following reasons.

1. Increased fuel price
2. High interest rate
3. There are some rumors govt is going to increase import duty (only rumors)

Once motor sector was my favorite sector and I gain handsome profit from DIMO, ASHO and UML

I don't think CTC and LLUB share prices will rise further but you will enjoy handsome dividends every quarter.
In plantation sector, I would rather go for KGAL than KVAL.

Re: Hidden gem ?

Post by anubis on Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:18 pm

@osmand: here's my analysis on CONN:

http://i44.tinypic.com/34oodja.png

EPS for 2011 = 1.41 + 1.06 + 1.00 + 1.74 = 5.21

Therefore, current P/E = 73 / 5.21 = 14 (approx)

Now, let's be bit optimistic and estimate the EPS as 1.74 * 4 (assuming they'll keep up their performance).

Then, Estimated (optimistic) EPS = 1.74 * 4 = 6.96
Estimated (optimistic) P/E = 73 / 6.96 = 10.5

I feel reluctant to call this a "gem". Is a P/E of 10.5 OK in this sector?

Also, if you look at their company income statement, you'll see that they are at a loss... doesn't that mean they suck at their core business?

I exited from CONN recently, not very confident about it. Just my opinion.

Cheers!

Re: Hidden gem ?

Post by Monster on Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:28 pm

osmand, ACAP is not crap share as many in CSE. However, I would invest some other shares in the same sector than investing on ACAP. There are many undervalued shares in the same sector than ACAP. So, I wouldn't call this as a 'gem'

@anubis, all most all the shares in the hotel sector are overvalued except few hotels. This sector is trading high PE ratio expecting future growth. Out of that CONN is one of the best among others. Currently I don't have CONN shares in my portfolio. I exited @ 120/- from CONN last year with 35% profit.

Re: Hidden gem ?

Post by anubis on Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:36 pm

@Monster: Thanks! I do agree with your view.

May be it's worth to discuss on a separate thread whether these high P/E ratios in the hotels sector can be justified.

I mean we're expecting tourism to grow in Sri Lanka, and I think it will. But are we expecting too much? is this the only country that foreigners like to visit? IMHO tourism and hotel sector is bit over hyped in media. It might grow a lot but not as rapidly as we expect.

Anyway, that's for some other discussion Smile

Cheers!

I think out of 34 Hotels in the CSE, very few are paying regular dividend to the share holders.
Some of them in the past were issuing rights and getting more fund from share holders.
Nowadays we can see the trade is getting to pick up due to various reasons.
Next couple of years going to be the testing period for the investors.
Hope by 2014 onwards we can get more benefits in the form of dividend.
Up to that point speculation will play a big role in this sector.
The above are my opinion, may be I'm 100% wrong, please update.

I think ASCO, SINI a bit illiquid as my memory serves and REEF, CFL due to manipulation Wink

Well these are not hidden gems but speculative bastards.. A hidden gem should be able pick up gradually with time and we should be able to see their growth from now on so we pick them up before crowd starts.. Last year BFL, TAFL were considered as hidden gems.. Then after the collection around 9 levels PCH emerged as one too.. hope our guys remember the stories..

In reality KGAL, RCL can come up as gems in coming years though the revenues are not that much for these quarters..

Hidden gem stories in CSE end up with manipulation.
Past gave good examples.
