Beta is a measure of a stock's volatility (how much a stock could move up or down over a given period of time) against the market. In other words, Beta measures how much the stock tends to deviate from the market average. The market is said to have a beta of 1. Stocks with a beta of >1 move around more than the market itself does, and are considered to be riskier stocks (with potential for higher returns). Similarly, a beta value of <1 indicate stocks that move up and down less often and in lesser amounts than the market itself does, and represent more stable stocks.

just to add a little....if a stock has a beta of 2, then if the market appreciates by, say 10%,,,the stock appreciates by 20%.....same for depreciation.
