Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe summoned UNP MP John Amaratunga for a meeting today over his recent trip to the Middle East with President Mahinda Rajapaksa, reports said.

Wickremesinghe sought a clarification from Amaratunga over media reports that he had sat with the Government delegation for bilateral talks in Jordan when he was allowed to go only to visit religious sites.

When asked about the meeting Amaratunga told the Colombo Gazette that he briefed Wickremesinghe on his Middle East visit and cleared the air over media reports claiming he will join the Government.

Amaratunga said that the invitation to visit Jordan came from President Mahinda Rajapaksa through External Affairs Minister, Professor G.L Peiris.

The opposition leader was asked if he had any objections to Amaratunga travelling to Jordan to visit religious sites to which Wickremesinghe had responded saying he had no objections provided Amaratunga did not attend any bilateral talks, Amaratunga said.

Amaratunga denied reports that he had sought a post in the Government nor was he approached by the President to join the Government.

The UNP MP added that he was told by the President that even other opposition members will be invited in future to travel with Government delegations during overseas visits. (Colombo Gazette)

Meanwhile analysts say John Amaratunga with the crossing to SLFP is trying to make his Eldest Son-In-Law Dinesh Weerakkody as the next Chairman of NDB-DFCC Merged largest Development Bank in Sri Lanka under present Regime's Banking Consolidation plan.Weerakkody already held the Chairmanship of country's number one Private Sector Licensed Commercial Bank - Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC (COMB) until first quarter of 2014 when MR government is ruling the country.
