The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) is currently under-performing and needs urgent capital market reforms to put the market into shape. But at present most local institutional investors are out of the market, a top industry specialist said.
"Any market to perform well, needs local institutional investor participation, especially that of the pension funds, ie, EPF, ETF, insurance companies and Unit Trusts, Their participation in the stock market is absolutely necessary for the sustainability of the CSE, the top official, who wished to remain anonymous told The Island Financial Review.
" A few crossings happen on and off and give a boost to the market, but this is not sufficient without the implementation of the capital market reforms report, which recommended a completely holistic reform process for the market, the official who was involved in the drafting of capital market reforms said.
He added - "Only 6.5 percent of the 3.1 trillion market capitalization of the CSE is owned by institutional institutions, such as, EPF, ETF, insurance companies and Unit Trusts , who are now completely inactive in the market.

True, absence/low participation from institutional, high end groups keep the market laggard. Also retail investors activities are shown very low as a consequence of heavy losses they experienced in recent past.
