April tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka tops 160,000; growth of 17.5 per cent

The number of tourist arrivals during April 2017 is 160,249 according to the latest statistics released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Authority. Compared to the arrival of 136,367 tourists during the corresponding month in 2016, this is a growth of 17.5 per cent.
While 765,202 tourists had arrived in Sri Lanka during the first four months of 2017, when compared to the 721,185 who had arrived during the first four months of 2016, this is a growth of 6.1 per cent.
The highest number of tourists during April has been from India. While the number stands at 110,891, this is a growth of slight drop of 0.6 per cent as against the tourist arrivals of 111,514 during April 2016.
Meanwhile, 99,045 tourist arrivals from China during April 2017 shows a growth of 2.2 per cent, 76,978 arrivals from the United Kingdom by 11.8 per cent, 54,256 arrivals from Germany by 5.3 per cent, and 43,861 from France by 1.6 per cent.
During the first quarter of 2017, due to the country’s main airport, the Bandaranaike International Airport undergoing refurbishments, flights into Sri Lanka had to be limited. Under such circumstances, tourist arrivals during February 2017 had dropped by 0.1 per cent and the arrivals in March by 2.5 per cent.
