Just look at the amount of the dividend. Most of the it is worthless. If it is really a good dividend price will move up with the rumour and may come down with announcement and/or on XD date.

PS:-I am not an expert.

If the dividend of a share is very attractive and satisfiable according to the investment, that share price moves up because investors try to purchase shares before XD date and they like even to hold them as only fundamentally strong companies pay dividends so the risk is low. When the dividends are not attractive, big shareholder sell their stocks. If they sell them at bid prices, absolutely the share price moves down. Smile

If the dividend is worthy as per the share price, it will move up more than the dividend on the first day it self.. Then we see a time of a stagnation on a particular price..
Before XD date, it may either move up or down but after XD date, generally it goes down at least by the dividend amount..

For most of the shares in CSE , you can take giving a dividend as a signal of progress and strength of the entity for long term judgements.
You cannot expect short term price ups because the amount they give is very small compared to the market price.

Theoretically giving dividends mean money is going out from the Company. Hence if you expect "increase in value " ?....

I have seen some people shout at AGMs asking more dividends. A person call Wijeweera - who speaks in all AGMs- always cry for more dividends.

I prefer low dividend paying companies if they show good future growth potential because for me money in good hands is always better then money spread among the crowd.
